The Hopkins boys’ varsity basketball team absorbed a 63-56 loss at Hamilton Tuesday night.
It was the first time the Viking had played since their 63-51 season-opening loss Dec. 7 to Wayland. Their game at Allendale was canceled because of health concerns.
Hamilton jumped out to a 23-12 at the end of the first quarter, but Hopkins battled back to close the gap to 29-27 at intermission. The Hawkeyes were able to pull away to slim leads in the second half.
Tristen Perry finished with 16 points, Josh Tew finished with 13 and Jayden Prather 11.
“We are a very young basketball team that grew up quite a bit after almost two weeks off from game,” said coach Jake Jewett. “Hamilton is always a tough opponent, and we played right with them for four quarters. I’m proud of our effort, we improved with taking care of the ball, and the guys showed a lot of resiliency.”
The Vikings will be back in action Tuesday, Jan. 4 vs. an undefeated WM Aviation Academy quintet.
