Vikings split 2 very different ballgames

The Hopkins softball team did a Jekyll and Hyde routine in a non-league doubleheader with GR Covenant Christian Monday afternoon.

The Lady Vikings mercied Covenant in game one 11-1, but then turned 180 degrees and got mercied themselves in the nightcap 15-4.

Senior hurler Hannah Brinks pitched a masterful opener, limiting Covenant to just five hits and one run, walking none and striking out seven.

Meanwhile, Hopkins’ offense was more than apparent.

Ava Vanderkolk belted a home run, Brinks unloaded a couple’s own doubles and Lyla Reynolds and Cami Hibma had one two-bagger apiece.

Kaylee Burgess came up with three hits and Callie Washburn went 2 for-2. The Vikings collected 13 hits in all.

Not so in game two, as the Chargers took charge in the first inning, featuring a home run, and they plated six runs in the second and added two more in the third. VanderKolk delivered a home run for the Vikings,

Gracie Stallard started for Hopkins and was charged with the loss. Hannah Brinks pitched four and one-third innings in relief

Madison Schwartz and Cami Hibma both collected two hits for Hopkins Brinks, Lyla Reynolds, Hibma and Vanderkolk each drove in one run

The Vikings, now 7-9 on the season overall, will welcome Thornapple Kellogg Thursday for their next game.
