The Wayland, Hopkins and Martin girls’ basketball teams continue to light up the scoreboard and pile on the victories.

Wayland put on an offensive showcase Tuesday night at Middleville Thornapple Kellogg in a 71-35 shellacking. Hopkins pulled off a 59-39 triumph at Grandville Calvin Christian, an opponent the Lady Vikings usually can’t get the best of. And Martin continued its defensive prowess with a 47-30 victory over Hartford.

Wayland hiked its overall season record to 8-2, taking control early enough that coach Wes Hudson was able to empty his bench for the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Harmony Laker led the offensive attack with 23 points and senior guard Maddy Terry added 16, including four three-point field goals. Junior Reese Coughlin had nine points and freshman Addi Sikorsky had seven.

The Lady Wildcats are now 2-0 in the O-K Gold Conference.

Hopkins in years gone by has been an also-ran to Calvin Christian, even finishing second in the O-K Silver Conference standings to the Squires. Not this time, as the Vikings posted a 20-point victory on Calvin’s court.

Mady Weber led the scoring parade with 19 points, Ellie Sebright had 11 and Nevaeh Helderop 10.

Hopkins now owns a league record of 2-0 and is 6-3 overall.

The Martin girls improved to 7-1 overall with their win on the road. The Lady Clippers used their solid defense to take control early, holding Hartford to just four points in the first quarter and six by halftime.

Makala Goddard posted 15 points, Avery Jager added 10 and Lynsey Jager and MaryBeth Ritchie both counted seven. Included in Goddard’s total were three threes.

Coach Ben Schipper said it “was a solid win considering we’re still missing Elizabeth Reinke due to injury and Cirsten Coburn was out sick. Being up 25-6 at halftime, I’m disappointed we gave up 30 points, but watching the film back, we weren’t making major defensive mistakes.

“I was happy with our offensive aggressiveness for most of the game and eight of our nine girls scored, which is great to see. We ran the floor extremely well.

“Standing ovation to our posts running the floor. Lynsey Jager scored seven points, all off our home run passes by making layups or getting fouled. We must have scored at least 12 points from hitting our rim runner.

“Avery Jager and Marybeth Ritchie were both very aggressive and Makala Goddard played a great game offensively with 15 points and 7 assists while applying solid defensive pressure.”
