Evie Mathis’ phenomenal success in the pole vault this spring has reached new heights (pun intended).
The Wayland Middle School seventh-grader, the daughter and Rick and Cindy Mathis, earlier this month cleared 9 feet 6 inches to set the WMS record and claim the No. 1 slot in the State of Michigan. She ended the track season ranked No. 2 in the nation among seventh-graders in the event.
“She wanted to clear 9′ 6″ all week and practiced and practiced,” said proud father Rick Mathis. “She cleared it so many times in practice that I knew the muscle memory was locked in. She did it!”
Mathis, who placed first in every meet this year, set a goal of 9′ and crushed it.
“She is even giving up gymnastics to pursue pole vault,” her dad said, noting that anyone who knows her understands that says a lot.
Congratulations! Outstanding effort!
