Wayland boys’ track team takes all the marbles again in Gold

The Wayland boys’ track team polished off an unbeaten regular season Friday by winning the O-K Gold championship at the league meet at Middleville Thornapple Kellogg.

The Wildcats turned in a 6-0 record in dual meets and were never headed in any invitationals this spring  They amassed 163 points to run away with the Gold title. It was their second straight Gold championship.

The girls squad turned in a more than respectable performance among the seven teams in the league meet, capturing third place with 99 points, behind South Christian and the host school.

Jake Reeder and Henry Maass checked in at 1-2 in the 200-meter dash, with the winning time recorded as 22.04 seconds.

Brock Wheeler turned in the winning time of 50.19 seconds in the open 400 meters.

The Wildcat boys scored heavily in the 110-meter high hurdles when Alex Hubbard won the race in 15.46 second and teammate Luke VandeZande was third. A 1-3 finish was repeated in the 300-meter hurdles the Hubbard won it in 40.79 seconds and Aiden Natividad took third.

As usual, Wayland performed well in relays. The 400 quartet won in 43.75 seconds with Drew Hudson, Jake Reeder, Luke VandeZante and Maass. The ‘Cats took first in the 800 relay with Maass, Wheeler, VandeZente and Reeder in 1:29.29. The Wildcats foursome of Reeder, Hubbard. Chance Lenhart and Wheeler won in 3:29.36 in the 1600 relay.

Ashton Kuhlman settled for second in the shot put, but he moved closer to state qualifying performance. Jack Lyons was third in the discus and he advances.

Justin Springs leaped 19-9 in the long jump to finish second.

In the girls’ meet:

Abree VanDenBrink broke the finish line tape in 5:38.99 to take third. She was also runner-up in the 3200 with a time of 12:27.21.

Freshman Lillie Lakatos was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles.

MacKenzie Koszitsky was third in the shot put with a toss of 33-2, but she emerged as league champion in the discus at 103-5.75.

Gwen Howard tied for second in the high jump at 5-0.

The Wildcats swept the top three places in the pole vault with perennial champion Evie Mathis winning it at 12-6 and the teammates Megan Stack and Bee Hoodgewind took second and third, respectively. Mathis added a fourth in the long jump.
