Morgan Fugate scores a kill in a match last year. She had a major role in helping the Wildcats get past Cedar Springs Thursday night..

The Wayland varsity volleyball team overcame a horribly sluggish start Thursday evening and took three of the last four sets against O-K Gold Conference rival Cedar Springs.

The Lady Wildcats lost the first set 25-21, but then quickly roared back, taking control of game two with a 10-2 run and never look back route to a 25-11 rout. They led all the way in a close third set, but a late run enabled them to pull away to a 25-14 triumph.

The hard offensive hitting of Morgan Fugate and Kayla Reed keyed the Wildcats’ surge in the second and third sets.

The Lady ‘Cats had difficulty with their serves, failing at least five times to get the ball over the net, twice in the opening loss.

In the fourth set, Wayland came out flat again, falling behind 4-0, but scored nine of the next 10 points and was up 15-8, before letting the Red Hawks back into it 15-12.

The ‘Cats has Cedar Springs on the ropes at 24-16, but again gave up some momentum and causing coach Krissy Dill to call a timeout. Wayland finally won 25-20.

Wayland is now 2-1 in conference dual matches and 3-3 overall.
