Wayland, we have a female hurdler par excellence!

Wayland freshman Corrina Courser and sophomore Seth Sevenski-Popma both had an astonishing day Saturday at the Comstock Park Invitational.

The Lady Wildcats finished sixth in the meet and the boys were fifth.

Courser wowed the crowd by running past all comers in both the 100-meter high hurdles and 300-meter intermediate hurdles. The freshman sensation nipped senior Erin Fitzpatrick of Grandville by two-hundreths of a second, finishing in 17.50 seconds. She didn’t have quite the photo finish in the 300, taking that race over Fitzpatrick, 49.4 seconds to 51.04.

Courser settled for sixth in the 200-meter dash, but was was only one and 37/100 seconds away from first place.

Meanwhile, Sevenski-Popma won the open 400 meters in 52.17 seconds, edging Kenowa Hills sophomore Anthony Taylor by 33-hundredths of a second.

Other highlights on the day for the boys:

  • Lee Anderson took third in both hurdling events, finishing in 16.49 seconds in the 110-meter highs, and in 43.87 seconds in the 300.
  • The 1600-meter relay was fourth with Anderson, Sevenski-Popma, Alec Zoerman and Anthony Muscarella.
  • The 800-meter relay team was fourth, with Caleb Wolf, Muscarella, Sevenski-Popma and Devin Jakey.
  • The 3200-meter relay was fourth, with Zoerman, Sean McCarthy, Caleb Pletcher and Jonathan Zuiderveen.
  • Jakey was fourth in the long jump.
  • Pletcher was eighth in the high jump.
  • Muscarella took fifth in the pole vault and teammate Elijah Veldman was seventh.

Other highlights for the Lady Wildcats:

  • The 3200-relay team was third, with Rylee Cronkright, Zoe Antel, Grace Haase and Maggie Whitney.
  • Whitney was fourth in the open 400-meter run and fifth in the 800.
  • The 1600-meter relay team of Whitney, Antel, Abigail Haase and Courser finished fourth.
  • McKenna Dutkiewicz finished seventh in the discus.
  • Asiia Sok was seventh in the pole vault.
