Elwyne Powers of Wayland was recognized by the West Michigan Officials Association (WMOA) and received the Distinguished Service Award for his 55 years of service to the Wayland Union High School Athletic Department.
Powers, a 1972 graduate of Wayland Union participated in basketball, cross country, track and field, and wrestling while in high school. He began working for the athletics department while he was still a student, taking care of the athletic fields. His legacy of supporting the Wildcats has only grown from that moment.
He was an MHSAA basketball official for 33 years, a Wayland Community recreational umpire for 44 years, and a Wayland Community recreational coach for 15 years.
