Whitney 4th in state 800, breaks school record again

Wayland junior Maggie Whitney broke her won school record in the 800-meter run in the Division 2 state finals in Zeeland Saturday.

Whitney ran a 2:17.4 time and placed fourth in the event.

The Hopkins girls’ track team meanwhile scored just one point in the Division 3 state meet, an eighth-place finish by junior Meghan Schulz in the shot put.

Schulz broke the school record in the event by hurling the orb 38 feet one inch, more than a foot better than her previous best. She also placed 12th in the discus, throwing it 107 feet, one inch.

The Wildcat boys also had strong finish by sophomore Caleb Wolf in the open 400 with a time of 51.7, taking 17th place, but only a half second away from 11th.

Wolf, Lee Anderson, Anthony Muscarella and Seth Sevenski-Popma ran the 1600-meter relay in 3:33.4, taking 25th place.  

Anderson was ninth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 40.8 seconds, only six-tenths of a second away from fifth.

Jasmine Fisher competed in the 3200-meter run and finished 25th with a time of 12:16.09.

The 800-meter relay team of Brittney Houseman,
Madeline Krcatovich, Laura Velderman, Savannah Emaus finished in its best-ever time by two seconds, but was disqualified.
