Both the Wayland boys and Lady Wildcats Wednesday lost to Byron Center by identical 23-7 scores..

Boys’ coach Sherry Miklusicak said, “What looked to be a hopeful night for a good match, turned into a disappointment. Byron Center lost a lot of bowlers from last year’s talented squad of state record setting bowling. The Bulldogs just seem to tear up the lanes against our Wildcats.”

The boys lost the first Baker game and won the second. The bright pots in the first game were by anchor Dillon Smith with a fine 245 game (and 182 in the second game). Another bright spot was freshman Hunter Fleser, who just joined the team saw his first varsity experience with a decent 151 game. Alan Beggs added a 159 game.

“Unfortunately, they ran into two hot Byron Center players who shot 220 and 213,” Miklusicak said. “What is interesting was these two BC players are former Wayland students.”

The Lady Wildcats lost to top-seeded Byron Center Bulldog.

“Even though we lost 23-7, I see our young team progressing beyond my expectations this year,” said coach Mike Omness.

The Wayland girls started the evening by taking the first Baker game and only lost total by 3 pins.

“During the first individual match, I kept glancing over to see how the girls were doing,” said Miklusicak. “It was really close until late in the match when those darn Dogs started pulling away.”

Unfortunately, Byron swept Wayland in game one. The Lady ‘Cats did manage to take 3 points in the last game, but it wouldn’t be enough.

“I am pretty sure Byron girls were very confident going into tonight’s match, but I think they may have learned something,” Miklusicak said. “Wayland wasn’t as easy to defeat as they thought it would be. Wayland is a young team, and will be a team to watch in the future!”
