The Wayland High School girls’ and boys’ varsity bowling teams competed Saturday with heavy hearts with the news of the passing of Frank Rybiski, volunteer assistant coach, and father of boys’ coach Sherry Miklusicak.
The Lady Wildcats finished fifth at the Red Hawk Invitational and the boys were 17th.
“You could tell they were running on fumes today,” said coach Eric Bottrall. “But they did a wonderful job as they qualified seventh and made it to match play for the third consecutive tournament.”
Wayland came up a little short to a very good Grand Rapids Northview ladies team to finish fifth.
Isabella Harnish and Kadence Bottrall both made the All-Tournament team.
High games were turned in by Lillian Gates 128, Kendra VanKoevering 133, Kadence Bottrall 191 and Isabella Harnish 193.
Wayland alumn Sydney Urben, former state champion, stopped in from college to help with coaching the girls’ team.
The boys’ squad finished in 17th place, but coach Bottrall said they are continuing to get better.
“This young group has been working hard with all of their games and the scores might not be there but they are working hard,” he commented. “Their frustration will go away soon as things will start to click for them.”
High games were recorded by Jordan Fitzgerald 124, Mark Musgrave 125, Max Oosterhouse129 and Alan Beggs 155.
