Wayland varsity softball coach Cheri Ritz, who also is a 1980 graduate of Wayland High School, picked up her 900th career coaching victory Saturday in the Wayland Invitational tournament with a 6-3 verdict over St. Joseph.
The triumph lifted the Lady Wildcats’ record to 8-7. Ritz has coached Wayland to two Division 2 state championships, in 2006 and in 2015.
Leading the Wildcats in their victory were Rya VanderKooi, Lauren Chiaramonte, Ava Dutkiewicz, Kayla Reed and Emily Bailey.
Wayland lost to St Joe, 13-1 in the other game. Kennedy Cole went 2-for-3 with a double. Grace Kincaid and Rya VanderKooi each had a hit.
