WHS girls, boys C-C teams both qualify for regionals

Both Wayland boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams Friday qualified for the Division 2 regional meet next weekend, as both took fourth places in the pre-regionals at the South Christian athletic complex.

The Wildcat boys scored 91 team points while Grand Rapids Christian won it with 28 and South Christian was runner-up. The Lady Wildcats scored 94 while Christian won it with 26 and South Christian was second.

Freshman sensation Isaac Dyer completed the 5K course in 17:53.50 to capture sixth place individually. Sophomore Travis Koon was 10th in 18:06.63. Sophomore Devin Weaver checked in 23rd, freshman Casey Jansen 26th and sophomore Jared Jandernoa 34th.

Sophomore Olivia Barabas paced the Wayland girls by taking fifth in 20:23.60 and freshman Ava Makowski was eighth in 20:38.92. Rounding out the scoring were Hannah Smith 23rd, freshman Elliot Antel 26th and sophomore Emma Thayer in 32nd.

Meanwhile, neither of the Hopkins cross teams qualified for regionals. The girls finished sixth at pre-regionals in Plainwell and the boys did not have enough runners to come up with a team score. Freshman Helena Kerber came in 10th at 21:47.54 and qualified for regionals as an individual. Sophomore Neveah Helderop was 24th, freshman Abigail Zalis was 30th,

As reported earlier, none of the top 10 boys’ and girls’ Wayland harriers will graduate at the end of this academic year. Maddi Houseman was 39th and Makenna Pendock 40th. Only three Viking boys competed, Caleb Beilby, Dean Heiden and Zachary Wisser.

The Wildcats and Vikings Tuesday will compete in the Allegan County meet and the regionals will be at Otsego on Saturday, Oct. 31.
