Robby Young, a 2003 Wayland High School graduate, is heading back to Michigan after spending 13 years teaching and coaching in Colorado Springs.
Young, who was an all-state cross country runner and state meet qualifier in swimming and track, has accepted the assistant coaching position for cross country and track at Michigan Technological University in the Upper Peninsula at Houghton.
Young also was an NCAA Division 2 All-American in cross country and finished fourth in the nation in the steeplechase at the NCAA meet in 2007.
He coached his Rampart High School varsity boys’ cross-country team last fall to its seventh conference championship in the last nine years and guided the Rams to their first conference track championship in more than 25 years.
The Rampart girls’ team finished second in the league meet at the same time last fall.
Young graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University in 2008 and started teaching earth science and physics in Colorado Springs that fall. He earned a master’s degree a year ago from the University of Missouri.
He and his wife, Sarah, an accounting official with Volleyball USA, live in Colorado Springs with their son, Corvid, 2 years old. He hopes to start at Michigan Tech as early as July 26 and his Huskies will be competing in the Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, along with Grand Valley.
He is the son of David T. and Coleen Young of Wayland.
