Coach Sherry Miklusicak said the Wayland boys’ and girls’ bowling teams had “knock down drag out” matches Wednesday afternoon with neighboring school Hopkins, but both managed to pull out victories.
The Wildcat boys’ outfit won a close 17-13 battle and the girls prevailed 25-5 at the Rock ’N Bowl Lanes in Leighton Township.
Wayland ’s boys won the first Baker game unimpressively 143-127.
“That definitely wasn’t our best effort and I’m sure the Vikings would like that game back,” acknowledged Miklusicak. “Our boys got themselves together in the second Baker game, winning 213 – 159.”Wildcat senior anchor Kyle VanEss, anchor bowler, led the team in Baker games with eight of nine possible strikes and Wayland went up 10-0,
“We were we up 10-0 because of home lanes advantage? Maybe, but Hopkins sure got lined up as they rolled some big games against us in match one” Miklusicak said. “Their entire team averaged 203 and screamed back into the match taking eight of nine points.
VanEss took his point 201-195. Jayse Henkel had a nice 199 game again.
High games for Hopkins, 240 by Cody Benting and 245 by Brad Reynolds, so the Wildcats’ lead was only 11-8.
Hopkins had won that first match by 201 pins and Wayland’s coach was a bit concerned as they started match two.
“We needed to take five points in match two so we had to get total pins,” Miklusicak said. “Did Hopkins just have a great first game? Would they do it again? It was a close game basically down to the last bowler and the last frame. Wayland had to take the total pins this game. That was the only way they could win the match.”
Louie Harnish came in and rolled a 201 game, beating his opponent. Raynie Arendson got his timing figured out (thanks to co-coach Eric Bottrall) and beat his opponent 175-100. Those two young men won by a big enough margin that the ‘Cats took this match by 31 pins! Meanwhile Charlie Brown III had a 224 game for Hopkins.
Wayland JV bowlers had high games by Gray Anguilm, Shaun Hooper, and Trevin Berens
In the second non-conference match of the week the Wildcat ladies left the lanes with a win, taking the first Baker game with a good score of 174. The second game was lost by 11 pins, but they took the two game total.
Wayland then took 19 of the next 20 points and secured the victory. Jasmine Ortiz took both her points with games of 127 and 153. Lily Keech took both points with games of 126 and 177 Brooke Trumbull won both with games of 124 and 143. Faith won the second match point with a 154. Haven Baker took both points with a 150 and 213. Haven’s 213 game was high game on the girls’ side all afternoon.
