The Wayland boys’ varsity bowling team improved its overall season record to 5-8-1 Monday with a 29-1 victory over O-K Gold Conference rival East Grand rapids.
The Lady Wildcats, meanwhile, improved to 13-1-1, with a 28-2 triumph. They are ranked No. 5 in the latest state-wide poll in Division 2.
It was the second time Wildcat boys and girls have outrolled East Grand Rapids this season. The boys beat the Pioneers 28-2 on Dec. 19.
Wayland started with a quick 10-0 lead after easily winning both Baker games.
High score of the evening for both boys teams was Dylan Roberts’ 176 game.
“The lanes had been freshly dressed and the Wildcats aren’t accustomed to that much oil,” said coach Sherry Miklusicak. “The guys did a nice job adjusting to the lane conditions.”
The Lady Wildcats jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead after taking both Baker games. In the first Baker, they won by only one pin.
“Scores were low tonight across the board,” Miklusicak noted. “It was our first encounter with some serious oil as we are used to dryer lane conditions. We know our focus will be on adjustments as well as developing a tougher mental game. Good teams can always find ways to step up their game.
“I would just write off the reason last evening’s scores were low as we are saving ourselves for Wednesday night’s match-up against Zeeland.”
