The Wayland boys’ varsity track team came in second Friday at the O-K Gold Conference track meet at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids.

The Wildcats scored 106.75 points, well behind league champion Forest Hills Eastern, which had 152.5. The girls, meanwhile, finished fifth, just a half point behind fourth-place Forest Hills. Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills won the meet and Middleville Thornapple Kellogg was second.

Adam Huff was the league champion in the discus throw at 164-09, his personal best effort, and teammate Bronson Huyck was fourth. But that was the only first the Wildcats took for the day.

There were plenty of runner-up finishes:

  • Kaharrie Pureifoy in the 100-meter dash, in 11.23 seconds, less than two-tenths of a second from first. He also was second in the 200 with a time of 22.46, nine hundredths of a second away from first.
  • Aidan Reeder, who ran the 400 in 53.10.
  • Terry Sylvester, Austin Graham, Cannon Fenn and Pureifoy in the 400-meter relay, 43.86.
  • Dylan Pallett, Margin Howard, Travis Koon and Devin Weaver in the 3200 relay, 8:27.87.

Third places were earned by Weaver in the 800, Huff in the shot put, and Reeder, Graham, Pedro Reis and Sylvester in the 800 relay.

The only league champion for the Lady Wildcats was senior Breanna Hyde, who won the long jump with her personal best leap of 16-8.

Freshman pole vaulting sensation Evie Mathis returned to action for the girls’ team and took second with a vault of 11-0, six inches below her school record effort. Teammate Kennedy Jasinski finished third and Megan Stack fifth.

Breanna Hyde was third in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a 48.7 clocking, her career best performance, and she was fourth in the 100-meter highs.

Taylor Wolf, Ana Teunissen, Faith Rollandini and Laney Wolf finished third in the 400 relay.
