There were no surprises Tuesday afternoon in a cold, wet and windy O-K Gold Conference boys’ cross-country meet at Thornapple Kellogg High School.
Wayland yet again finished second, just as it has all season, to league champion Forest Hills Eastern. The Hawks had 40 team points, the Wildcats had 82 and third-place Cedar Springs 95. So, coach Raymond Antel’s harriers finished the 2022 season as runners-up.
Senior leader Devin Weaver finished eighth in 16:58.37 over the 5,000-meter course. Sophomore Dylan Pallett was 14th in 17:15.57 and Travis Soon, James Butler and Isaac Dyer came in 19th, 20th and 21st, respectively in 17:44.09, 17:51.6 and 17:59.32, Martin g yet another occasion in which all of the Wildcat five checked in under 18 minutes.
The Wayland girls had to settle for seventh place with 142 points. Forest Hills Eastern won that competition as well.
Senior ace Olivia Barabas was the only Wayland runner to crack the top 10, in 20:06.99. Noelle House placed 21st in 21:32.86, Elliot Antel 25th in 21:46.56, Emma Thayer 40th in 23:16.43 and freshman Megan Staclk 49th in 25:48.65.
Wayland will be among the schools competing Friday in the Allegan County meet at the U.S.-131 Motorsports Park near Martin. The weather is expected to be much improved.
