Forgive the pun, but the Wayland boys’ and girls’ bowling teams lately have been on a roll. They both took first place Saturday in the Lowell Invitational and the boys captured a 22.5-7.5 win Monday over Grand Rapids Christian.
“It appeared we began right were we left off in the tournament on Saturday,” boys’ coach Sherry Miklusicak said.
The Wildcats win the first Baker game 197-124, as “The boys did what they had to do — limit their opens to just one frame.
However, a different story happened in the second Baker game in a 174-155 loss.
“You really cannot expect to win a Baker game that is below a 170 and our three opens in the seventh, eighth and ninth frames were our downfall,” Miklusicak said. “Fortunately, we were up 6-4 on a team that had beaten us 22-8 earlier in the year.
In the first individual round, Wayland prevailed 826 to GRC’s 774 and took 7.5 points.
“We only needed 1.5 points to tie and 2 more to win, and I felt very confident that we could accomplish that,” the coach said. “This set we bowled a bit better with an 883 to 790 and that gave us all need to seal the win! It is so nice to seek redemption on a team that had beaten us by almost the same score earlier in the season.”
Individual match scores were Alex Marble 155 – 179, Christian Courser 156,
Jordan Peters 159, Bryan Franck 167 – 172, Dylan Roberts 180 – 179, and
Dillon Smith 168 – 194.
The only thing crazy that happened was over on the girls’ lanes, Miklusicak noted, though it happens more often than crazy. Senior Co-captain Sydney Urben rolled another 250+ game to add to her list of high scores with the state.
The Lady Wildcats continued their recent successes with an impressive 29-1 verdict over GR Christian. They started with a 10-0 lead in Bakers, 135+180=315 and then won all but one point in individuals as well.
Scores for individuals included Jessica Henderson with 99+187=286; Amber Beggs with 157+141=286; Mackenzie Banas with 170+179= 349; Marissa Bruinsslot with 163+179= 342 and Sydney Urben with 185+257=442.
“I’m looking forward to what the rest of the season holds for all of us,” said Bruinsslot, senior co-captain with Urben. “I love sitting on the bench and watching how far everyone has come in their shot. I look at all of their beautiful faces and smiles, and I can’t help but love that I have got to watch each and every one of these women (and men!) improve drastically in their mental and physical state of bowling!”
The teams will face a tough South Christian Wednesday at Spectrum Lanes in Grand Rapids.
