Wildcat boys, girls both cop 1st place in Hastings relays

It was a very good day to be a Wildcat in Hastings, as both the Wayland girls’ and boys’ track team captured first place at the Hastings Relays.

The boys picked up 84 points and the girls 40 to outpoint the rest of the field. Hopkins girls finished third and Hopkins boys fourth.

The Wildcats did their heaviest scoring in the mixed relay races, winning the 1600 and two of the three mixed specialty races. 

Wayland dominated the shot put, thanks to Adam Huff’s toss of 51 feet, 4.75 inches, filled by Craig Dermody at 41-10.5 and Ashton Kuhlman at 41-5.25.

Adam Huff also won the discus, at 159-9 and the field finished second.

Taylor Hoogewind captured first in the girls’ shot put with a personal best 31-2.25

Kennedy Jasinsky took top honors in the pole vault by clearing 10-6.

Maurgan Howard, Taylor Wolf, Aiden Reeder and  Laney Wolf combined efforts to win the 1600-meter relay.

Mixed specialty relay (100, 100, 200, 400) had Wayland first, 1:54.33. Austin Graham, Taylor Wolf, Henry Mass and Eliot Antel. Hopkins was second with  Brayden Harnish, Riley Homrich, Malachi Navis, Navaya Ingle.

In the mixed specialty relay (100, 100, 200, 200 meters) — The team of Justin Springs, Gwen Howard, Jake Reeder, Jersey Beckwith was first in 1:19.75. Hopkins was second with Kielah Bonga, Isaiah Robinson, Gage Martin and Andrea Brewer.

Hopkins was first in the mixed 400 relay with Brayden Harnish, Riley Homrich, Ellarie Baugh and Malachi Navis, 47.69, six hundredths of a second faster than Hastings.

The Vikings also finished first in the mixed 3200 relay in 10:06.39 with Jack Estelle, Jacob Helder, Jaeden Harshberger and Lily Dewey. Wayland was second with Dylan Pallett, Ashlee Seesaw, Breslin Vandenbos and Kaeli Whip.

Hopkins took first in the 3200-meter relay with Lillian Dewey, Matthew Guzman, Jaeden Harshberger and Jack Estelle 13:03.7. Wayland was second was Kaeli Whip, Aiden Reeder, Ashlee Seesaw and Dylan Pallett.

The Wildcats also took second in mixed throwers with Ashton Kasprowicz, Taylor Hoogewind, Craig Dermody and Ava Teunissen. They were runners-up in the mixed shuttle hurdle with Taylor Vriesenga, Alex Hubbard, Emily VanVolkinburgand Austin Graham.

The mixed 2400-meter relay had Wayland second with Breslin Vandenbos, Taylor Vriesenga, Dergaso Larsen and Kaeli Whip.

Kielah Bonga of Hopkins was second in the shot at 29-4.25 and second in discus, 88-3.
