Both the Wayland boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams Friday finished in the middle of the pack at the annual Michigan State University Spartan Invitational at Forest Akers East Golf Course.
The Wildcat guys checked in 15th among 29 teams in the Bronze Division with 430 points, as Chelsea won with 49. The Lady Wildcats were 14th among 27 with 419 points, as Petoskey won it with 49.
Perhaps the highlight of the day individually was junior Olivia Barabas, who finished 13th in the field of 263 runners with a five-kilometer time of 20:49.5. Follwing her were teammates Elliot Antel in 94th, Hannah Smith 95th, Mackenzie VanderWeide 124th and Emily Tuinstra 135th.
Freshman Dylan Pallett paced the Wildcat boys by completing the course in 18:27, good for 61st place in a field of 278. Sophomore Henry Oudbier was 72nd in 18:52.2, sophomore Isaac Dyer 93rd, junior Devin Weaver 106th and Travis Koon 133rd.
The Wayland squads will take an eight-day break until Saturday, Sept. 25, when they will run in the Cedar Springs Invitational.
