The Wayland boys’ varsity bowling team fell quickly behind South Christian Monday afternoon and eventually fell to the Sailors, 21-9.
However, the Wayland girls pulled out an 18-12 decision.
For the Lady Wildcats, Baker game one ended with a tie, but they jumped out to a quick start in Baker game two, winning by 31 pins, so Wayland was up 8 to 2.
South swept the first match game, taking all 10 points. High game for the ‘Cats was by freshman Bella Harnish with a 157, but they were now down 11-8.
Match two was pivital, as the Lady ‘Cats needed to take five the next 11 points to win. High game again went to Harnish with a 175.
“I was watching her ball and it had a nice finish into the pocket, and I loved the smile on her face when she turned around,” said boys’ coach Sherry Miklusicak. “With as much joy, it was fun to watch another freshman Lilly Gates who was on her way to rolling a personal best of 164. Boy did we need these ladies leading us off tonight. Wayland took all but one of the remaining points and grabbed the victory!”
Things were a little different in the boys’ matches.
“We really needed to take the Baker games to start things out,” said Miklusicak. “South didn’t have great scores on their Baker games, but they were better than ours. We only mustered a 142 and a 147.”
In the first match, the Wildcats lost every point except for Joe Laidler’s game. Christian Courser lost his point by just one pin.
“Match 2 proved to be a pivotal point for this improving Wayland team,” the coach said. “Typically an opposing coach will substitute their JV team in when they are guaranteed a win. South didn’t do that tonight and I was proud that these young men didn’t just give up and accept the loss.
“These young men held their heads up high and kept trying – it’s called PRIDE! That says a lot and I am very proud of their effort.”
Wayland proceeded to take eight of nine possible points in the last game. Dillon Smith led this game with a 224.
