Wildcat boys take all the marbles at Delton C-C meet

The Wayland boys’ cross-country team ran away from the field Thursday afternoon at the Gilmore Car Museum, the Delton Invitational, capturing its first invitational championship this season.

The Wildcats’ 33 team points was 51 lower that runner-up Hastings.

The Lady Wildcats, meanwhile, placed third in the competition and Hopkins checked in sixth.

Senior ace Devin Weaver was runner-up in the boys’ individual race, checking in with a five-kilometer time of 17:14.69 behind a winning time of William Winter of Parchment at 16:59.13.

Sealing the team victory was the bunching performance of sophomore Dylan Pallett, senior Travis Koon and junior Isaac Dyer, who finished fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, with times of 17:52.31, 18:00.59 and 18:02.27.

Junior James Butler rounded the scoring and made sure of the victory by claiming 13th place with a time of 18:26.56.

So the Wildcat boys took five of the top 13 slots and all ran the course in less than 18:30.

There were 11 teams in the competition, including Hopkins, which finished 10th. Kenyon Katje was 43rd, Vijay DeZeeuw 73rd, Brennan Vilella 89th,  Adam Halsted 103rd and Jonathan Buskirk 104th.

Wayland senior Olivia Barabas came in third in 20:32.16 to lead Wayland in the girls’ race. Noelle House was was 13th, Elliot Antel 19th, Emma Thayer 21st, Ruby Sidebotham 62nd and Emily Tuinstra 64th.

Sophomore Kamria Moored paced the Lady Vikings in 10th and teammate Neveah Helderop was one place behind her. Freshman Allison Breining was 32nd, Jaeden Harshberger 40th and Abigail Zalis 43rd.
