Wildcat boys’ track team is 1st in own invitational

The Wayland boys’ varsity track team captured first place in their own invitational Friday.

The Wildcats scored 718 team points to out point runner-up Plainwell by more than 100. The Wayland girls’ squad fared pretty well, too, racking up 540 points to take third behind Middleville Thornapple Kellogg and Plainwell.

Scoring heavily were thrower Adam Huff and Austin Graham. Huff easily won the shot put in 50 feet, six inches and the discus by almost 50 feet longer than anyone else at 166-08. His throw breaks the school record previously held by Tom Ainsworth, 166’1″.

Graham captured firsts, in the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.88 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 41.66 seconds.

The 400-meter relay team of Huff, GrahamGeno Wierckz, Landen Dunahoo edged out Big Rapids for first in 45.68 seconds.

Carter Marquard and Maurgan Howard went 2-3 in the high jump.

Wierckz captured third places in the sprints and in the long jump. The 3200 relay was second and the 800 and 1600 relay quartets both finished third.

For the Lady Wildcats, Taylor Hoogewind came up with a first in the discus at 96-09 and she was third in the shot.

Ava Makowski finished second in the 800-meter run.

The 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter relay units finished third.

Both the boys’ and girls’ pole vault competitions were scratched because of the high winds.
