It was the first time this season that the Hopkins girls’ track team didn’t finish first, but it was runner-up Saturday to Division 1 Lowell in the Hopkins Invitational.

The Lady Vikings compiled 135 points to the Red Arrows’ 173. Lowell also took the boys’ title with 154 points while Wayland was second with 98. Hopkins boys were seventh with 48 and Martin was 10th with 14. Wayland girls took fifth with 62 points and Martin was sixth with 45.

On a side note, NorthPointe Christian decided to compare performances to decide a meet that was canceled by bad weather last month, leaving Hopkins girls undefeated in six O-K Silver Conference dual meets and the Viking boys at 2-4.

Highlights of the girls’ competition:

  • Hopkins junior Emma Helder won the open 800-meter run with a time of 2:32.73 and Wayland’s Maggie Whitney was fourth.
  • The Lady Vikings were first in the 3200 relay with Jasmine Fisher, Gracie DeZeeuw, Alyssa Beilby and Helder in a time of 10:27.89. Wayland was third with Naomi Oosterhouse, Mie Tornbjerg, Zoe Antel and Whitney.
  • Hopkins sprinter Brittney Houseman was second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes to Marcedes Chandler of Kelloggsville.
  • The Hopkins 400-meter relay team won in 53.12 seconds, onely one-hundreth of a second ahead of Lowell, with Houseman, Savannah Emaus, Anna Washburn and Laura Velderman. The same quartet was second to Lowell in the 800 relay in 1:54.21. Wayland was a close third with Mackenzie Wolf, Kylea Wells, Jazmyn Santos and Madelyn Probst in 1:54.50.
  • Meghan Schulz surprised no one by winning the shot put at 35-9 and Martin sophomore Faith Guriz was second at 31-0 and Wayland’s Jessica Hortman third at 30-05. Schulz was first and Guriz second in the discus and Hortman was fourth.
  • Fisher took third in the 1600 for the Lady Vikings and Wildcat sophomore Tornbjerg was fourth. Fisher also was third in the 3200 and Wayland frosh Naomi Oosterhouse was fourth.
  • Hopkins’ Savannah Emaus won the pole vault at 7-6 and captured a second in the long jump at 15-7.75.
  • Hopkins freshman Lauren Brown was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles and sixth in the 300 lows. Grace Hasse was fifth in the highs for Wayland.
  • The Lady Wildcats took third in the 1600 relay with Whitney, Audrey Lepper, Sierra Greer and Probst in 4:33.33.
  • Martin added a sixth and seventh in the shot with Natalie Yowler and Jordyn Seizer and Yowler also scored in the discus.

Wayland competed again without the services of sophomore distance runner Rylee Cronkright and record-breaking sophomore hurdler Corinna Courser, who are nursing injuries.

 

Wildcat sprinters shine again in 400, 1600 relay

  • Three Wayland juniors swept the top three spots in the open 400-meter run with Caleb Wolf in 52.33 seconds, Seth Sevenski-Popma (52.53) and Ashton Ordway (52.93).
  • Ordway, Josh Butler, Sevenski-Popma and Wolf then captured first place in the 1600 relay in 3:31.27, more than three seconds faster than Lowell.
  • Wolf took second in the 200-meter dash behind Lee ace Thomas Robinson. Wolf checked in at 23.6 seconds and Robinson 22.44.
  • Alec Zoerman was third (2:09.64) and Josh Butler fourth (2:09.67) in the 800-meter run. Martin’s Logan Elkins was sixth.
  • Hopkins’ Todd Henley was second in the 3200 in 10:27.83 and fourth in the 1600, 4:45.44.
  • The Wayland 400 relay team was fourth with Devin Jakey, Ordway, Devin Westfahl and Austin Reeder. The 800 relay was third with Jakey, Ordway, Sevenski-Popma and Wolf in 1:34.95, a mere 0.28 seconds slower than Lee’s winning quartet.
  • Zoerman, Butler, Elijah Gamelin and Julian Leon-Flores hooked up for fourth in the 3200 and Martin was sixth with Brysan Young, Canton VandenBerg, Carsen Young and Logan Elkins.
  • Robert Bausick turned in a personal best in the shot put for Wayland, good for second at 43-0 and Hopkins’ Nathan Roberts was fourth. Roberts then copped a runner-up slot in the discus with a personal best 130-06 while Bausick finished fifth.
  • Trey Collins of Hopkins was fourth in the high jump at 5-10 and he cleared 11-0 in the pole vault for third.
  • Jakey was third in the long jump at 20-01.5 and Collins finished fifth.
