The Wayland boys’ varsity basketball team won its district tournament opener Monday evening, 74-56 over host Plainwell.

The Wildcats, now 12-11 for the season overall, led 32-19 at the half and 57-33 at the end of three periods, pretty much controlled the ballgame throughout the evening.

However, things may not be so easy Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. when they take on Wolverine Conference champion Otsego (17-4) in the semifinal round. Hastings, which defeated West Michigan Aviation Academy Monday, will play tourney favorite South Christian in the 5:30 game Wednesday.

The finals will take place at Plainwell at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Division 4 tournament at Martin, the host Clippers defeated West Michigan Lutheran Christian 46-35 to advance to the semifinal round Wednesday evening with an overall record of 3-19.
