The Wayland girls’ and boys’ varsity cross-country teams took sixth and seventh places, respectively, in the second O-K Gold Conference jamboree Wednesday afternoon.
Besides facing league opponents, the squads had to overcome cold and muddy conditions at the South Christian athletic complex.
As usual, East Grand Rapids won the girls’ meet and Grand Rapids Christian the boys. The two switched places in the other meet. East GR accumulated only 24 points among the girls’ teams. Wayland had 170, besting Wyoming.
Freshman Olivia Barabas was back in action and paced the Lady Wildcats with a 19th-place finish in 21:47.6. Gracie Hasse was 77th, Hannah Smith 78th, Naomi Oosterhouse 83rd and Serenna Van Houten 89th.
Wayland boys scored 202 points, 18 behind Wyoming. GR Christian won with 36.
Freshman Travis Koon, like Barabas, was back in action to lead the Wildcats in 59th place, with a time of 20:57.41. Steven Mosher was 63rd, Ian Russell 86th, Sam Garheden 109th and Devin Weaver 117th.
