Wildcat girls absorb 1st league loss on lanes

The Wayland boys’ varsity bowling team pulled out an 18-12 O-K Gold Conference victory over Hudsonville Unity Christian, but the girls’ squad absorbed its first league loss of the season, 17-13.

Lady Wildcats’ coach Eric Bottrall said, “Our spare game was not at its best today, but we can walk away knowing they gave it their all until the final frame.”

High games by Brooke Trumbull 165, Haven Baker 151, Faith Rabideau133, Lily Keech 131 and Jasmine Ortiz 123.

Unity Christian boys put a tough fight against Wayland, as the match was much closer than the 18-12 score indicated.

It was back and forth in the first Baker game. Wayland never opened until the last frame and won 207 to 178. In Baker game two, the ‘Cats didn’t bowl as well, with five opens, but only lost by four pins.

Doing well for Wayland in the Baker games were Dominic Baker filling three out of four frames and Wil Dewing filling three out of four frames, then really helping out with the team was Raynie Arendson with four out of four strikes.

So Wayland was clinging to a 6-4 lead at the close of the Bakers.

The Wildcat boys bowled well in game one

“They’ve had better games, but an 840 team total is decent,” coach Sherry Miklusicak said.

Dominik Baker took his point with a 151 game.

“His luck wasn’t with him, as he would rocket the pocket most of the afternoon, leaving the solid 8 pin a couple of times. the 10-pin was showing its nastiness as was the 7-pin!” Miklusicak said.

Wil Dewing took his point with a 194 game.

“He was rolling the ball very well!” The coach cmmented.

Kyle VanEss took his point with a 188 game. That gave Wayland three of the nine points needed to take total pins to get four more points, but they lost by seven pins.

The score was now Wayland 9 –  Unity Christian 10.

“We needed to show up for the last game! Unity wanted to beat us as we beat them at our own lanes earlier this season,” Miklusicak said. “It was tough. We were in a good spot in about the sixth or seventh frame, nearing the end of the game. I thought doom happened. Our first three bowlers opened in the ninth frame and I thought we were going to lose a little momentum but Unity’s third and fourth bowlers opened as well.

“Louis Harnish and Kyle VanEss really stepped up some extra pins for Wayland.”

Taking points in game two was Dominic Baker 149;  Jayse Henkel 138; Louis Harnish, though he had a 211, lost by just two pins. Kyle VanEss held on to put the icing on the cake for Wayland with a 227 game.
