The Wayland girls’ varsity basketball team made it 14 in a row Friday night with the greatest of ease in a 63-15 victory over visiting Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills.
Wildcat senior point guard Presley Hudson just about put the game out of reach in the first minute and a half, swishing a pair of three-point field goals, and she and junior guard-forward Ali Cutler both personally outscored the entire Ottawa Hills team.
When she wasn’t putting the ball into the hoop from near and far, Hudson practiced her customary wizardry with crisp passing and a bevy of assists off steals in a full-court press. The chief target for her passes was Cutler, who herself canned a pair of threes in the second quarter and she had 16 points by halftime while Hudson had 12.
And the Wildcats were cruising with a 39-12 cushion. They yielded just three points in the third quarter and none in the fourth period.
By game’s end, Hudson had 21 points and Cutler 20. Caroline Miller and Sydney Ritz both had six points. Diamond Phillips also tallied six points for the Bengals, who fell to 3-11 overall with the loss.
Wayland, ranked No. 2 in the latest state-wide Class B poll, will be gunning for its 15th straight win of the season Tuesday evening at Hamilton. The host Hawkeyes, who play in the O-K Green Conference, are 6-9 overall and 2-4 in league play.
