Wayland boys’ varsity golf coacimgh Chris Drew said it appeared to him that the O-K Gold Conference teams all were very competitive after the first league meet Tuesday.

Twenty-four hours later he was proven correct, as his Wildcats, who were fourth in the first league jamboree Tuesday at Gracewill, vaulted to first Wednesday at Quail Ridge.

Wayland recorded a score of 171, one stroke better than Grand Rapids Catholic Central. South Christian and Hastings, Tuesday’s winner, both checked in at 180 and Middleville Thornapple Kellogg 188.

“It was a great day for the Wildcats,” Drew commented. “Wayland played very well in the windy conditions. We have never played the back there, so we really didn’t have a great idea of we were in for. However, the guys stayed steady and played excellent golf on a tough course. I was very proud of their performance today.”

The win puts Wayland back in a tie for first in the overall Gold standings.

The ‘Cats were led by Rory Myers (40), Jake Omness (42), Robert Mucci (44) and Mitch Salisbury (45).

Wayland will have a busy weekend, playing in two 18-hole tournaments. Friday the Wildcats will be at the TK Invitational and Saturday at Bedford Valley near Battle Creek.
