Wildcat guys 2nd in Hudsonville tourney

The Wayland boys’ bowling team nabbed second place  Saturday at the Hudsonville Invitational.

The tournament started with two games and then five Baker games. After the two games, teams were seeded before the Baker games. Those teams who beat their opponents in the Baker games, would earn an extra 20 pins.

Game one was a slow start for some Wildats. Scoring well were Dominik Baker 219 and Kyle VanEss 180.  The ‘Cats only had an 817 team total, which out them in sixth place among the 12 teams competing.

Wayland’s second game was much better, with a team total of 937, which moved the Wildcats up to third place. Rolling well again was Dominik Baker 200, Louie Harnish 203, and Kyle VanEss 224.

“While the original paperwork stated the top seven places would be awarded a medal for the all tournament team, they decided to only award the top five places for some reason,” coach Sherry Miklusicak said.

Dominik Baker placed seventh and Kyle VanEss eighth.

Wayland, seeded third for Baker games, beat Grandville Varsity B team easily ,189-93 but then lost by four pins to Catholic Central, then beat East Kentwood 183-157 and Unity Christian 156-127.

In their fifth Baker, the Wildcats bested Zeeland, 174-227.

“We had won three of the five (in Bakers), so that gave us an extra 60 pins,” the coach explained. “We were still seeded third and the top four moved on to match play.

Wayland defeated the second-seeded Hudsonville A team in the first match play game, 203-156 and 188-171

Fourth-seeded Zeeland took down a mighty Grandville Team seeded number one. So Wayland and Zealand collided in the final round.

“We just ran out of steam and didn’t line up real well in the new pair of lanes,” Miklusicak explained. “To our non-bowlers out there, you move every game or two to a new pair of lanes and the oil pattern is different on each from all the previous bowlers.”

Dominik Baker was 16 – 18 in his Baker games.

Other individual performances were:

• Wil Dewing 10 – 18.

• Jayse Henkel 10 – 18.

• Louie Harnish 12 –  18.

• Kyle VanEss 20 – 23.

Raynie Arendsen and Trevin Berens contributed to the team’s scores as well.

“Finishing second in a tournament of 12 schools is a great day!” Miklusicak said. “Seven of the twelve schools were Division 1. This team can totally keep up with these schools if we can pick up some more single pin spares!”
