Wildcat guys have strong track opener in tri-meet

The Wayland boys’ varsity track team got off to a good start Tuesday in a tri-meet against O-K Gold Conference rivals Thornapple Kellogg and South Christian. The Wildcats bested TK 89.5 to 33.5 and South Christian 82-41.

The Wayland girls’ team had to settle for a split, beating South Christian 64-58, but losing 81-42 to host Thornapple Kellogg.

Highlights from the indue and relay events:

100 — Henry Maas, 11.38 seconds. Photo finish over Elliott Neff TK and Ethan White South Christian.

200 — Jake Reeder and Henry Maass 1-2 in 200, winning time 22.61.

400 — Brock Wheeler, 50.45.

800 — Xander Stepek, second place.

1600 — Ethan Manning and Mason Fein went 3-4.

110 hurdles — Alex Hubbard and Luke VandeZande 1-2, 16.11 seconds.

300 intermediate hurdles — Alex Hubbard in 41.79 seconds.

400-meter relay — The winning quartet was Drew Hudson, Jake Reeder, Luke VandeZande and Henry Maass in 44.18 seconds.

880-meter relay — Brock Wheeler, Jake Reeder, , Henry Maass and Luke Vandezande in 1:3309.

3200-meter relay — Wildcats were second with Ethan Manning, Xander Stepek, Mason Fein and Reese Senneker.

Shot put — Ashton Kuhlman 50-4, first.

Discus — Jack Lyons 122-0, first.

Pole Vault — Jackson Byers, 10-0.

Long Jump — Justin Springs, 20-3.

Girls’ meet results

Laney Wolf finished third in both the 100- and 200-meter races.

Abree VanDenBrink was second in the 1600.

The 400-meter relay team was second with Jordan Grevenstuk, Evie Mathis, Quinn Reeder and Laney Wolf.

The 800-meter relay team was second with Megan Brogger, Evie Mathis, Quinn Reeder and Laney Wolf.

Marissa Ainsworth and Jordan Grevenstuk went 1-2 in the shot put. The winning distance was 30-5.

Gwen Howard was second in the high jump at 5-0.

The Lady Wildcats swept the top three spots in the pole vault with Evie Mathis clearing 12-0, followed by Megan Stack and Bre Hoogewind.

Evie Mathis added a second in the long jump.
