Wildcat teams score victories vs. Wyoming

The Wayland boys’ bowling team Monday at the local Rock ’N Bowl destroyed the 10th frame with a historic 13 out of 15 possible strikes to defeat a much-improved Wyoming outfit.

The Lady Wildcats, meanwhile, had another good day on the lanes as they defeated the Wolves 28-2 with high games by Haven Baker 245, Faith Rabideau168, Brooke Trumbull 148, Jasmine Otis 144 and Lily  Keech 117.

Wyoming boys won the first Baker game 209-180.  “We didn’t expect that,” coach Sherry Miklusicak said. “We bowled well, but had three splits and there isn’t much you can do about filling those frames.”Kyle VanEss did cover his baby split, but the Wildcat lads found themselves down 4-0.

Wayland bounced back in Baker two by a 201-156 count. Jayse Henkel was four for four with all strikes and Louie Harnish filled all four of his frames. Raynie Arendsen was two for two and Kyle VanEss was five for five.

So the ‘Cats were up 6-4 as they took the total of the two games as well.

The first five frames of match play were lackluster.

“I was not happy with their spare attempts,” the coach said. “You just can’t consistently miss your seven and eight pin counts without even getting one pin or only pick up 50% of single pin spares.

“I challenged them in the eighth and ninth frames and that motivated them and they filled every frame. Then they challenged themselves in the tenth frame!”

Dominik Baker struck out in the tenth. Raynie Arendson followed at the number two spot with two strikes and an eight pin count, as did Jayse Henkel. Louie Harnish nailed three in the tenth! Kyle VanEss then finished up with the big three strikes as well.

“That gave us around 240 pins in the tenth frame alone!” Miklusicak exclaimed.

Baker had a 200, Anderson 159, Henkel 165, Harnish 212 and VanEss 215. The Wildcats were up 15-4 and only needed one more point for the win.

Game two had a few of the guys struggling as the lanes had burned up.

“For our novice readers, that means the oil was gone and the balls just hook too much and finish too hard,” the coach explained. “Some bowlers can adjust with a different ball.”

Rolling well again was Harnish with a 192 game. VanEss had the first eight or nine strikes. Even though he fell short of his fifth 300 game, he still had a high school season high 265.

The Wildcats hope to take some of that energy with them tomorrow (Tuesday) when they face conference leader Northview, last year’s state runner-up, at Northfield Lanes.
