Wildcat tennis team breaks even in 3 league matches

The varsity boys’ tennis team defeated Kenowa Hills Wednesday to even its league record thus far this season at 1-1-1.

The Wildcats looked convincing as they took it to Kenowa Hills 6-2.

Jackson Chesley took his first singles match 6-3, 6-2, Andrew Murphy lost at second singles match 3-6, 3-6, Nolan Ritz won at third singles 6-3, 6-0, while Austin Graham won his second match in a row by the score of 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles.

At first doubles, Cam Sieffert and Theo Oddy won 6-4, 6-1, but at No. 2 Andrew Hinds and Chase Robinson dropped their match, 5-7, 4-6.  The third doubles team of Garrett Spoor and Christian Haveman found their stride and took their match 6-4, 6-3.  At fourth doubles, the new team of Aidan Ketchapaw and Zach Rookus played well and won their match 6-3, 6-1.

With dual match victory, the Wildcats improved their OK Gold Conference record to 1-1-1, “with lots of tennis yet to come,” promised coach Ben Adams.

Before the Labor Day holiday, the Wildcats tied Middleville Thornapple Kellogg 4-4 on newly constructed courts.

Three of the eight matches were settled by tie-breakers.

At first singles, Jackson Chesley dropped a three-set match 6-0, 2-6. 4-6, while at second singles Andrew Murphy came out victorious in a three-set marathon lasting almost 3 1/2 hours, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5.

Nolan Ritz and Austin Graham won handily at third and fourth singles.

In the doubles flights, Cam Sieffert and Theo Oddy lost 0-6, 2-6 to a talented TK No. 1 tandem.  At second doubles, Andrew Hinds and Chase Robinson came alive after dropping the first set 3-6.

“Andrew and Chase learned to play as a team and be aggressive tennis players, taking the second and third sets 7-6, 7-6, both with tie breakers,” Adam said.

TK came out on top at third and fourth doubles to complete the 4-4 tie.
