Wildcat tennis team scores 5-3 win at Kenowa Hills

The Wayland boys’ varsity tennis team bounced back after a tough week Monday afternoon with a 5-3 win over Kenowa Hills.

“At first singles, Christian Sieffert brought along fierce determination as well as a great strategy that proved to be successful,” coach Ben Adams said. “He was able to execute his plan, keep his ground strokes accurate and his serves on target, taking his first victory of the season 6-2, 6-4.

Jackson Chesley, playing second singles, was able to take his match 6-2, 6-0.  At third singles, Andrew Murphy tried to get his game going, but in the end, fell 2-6, 1-6.  At fourth Singles, Nolan Ritz found his consistency and confidence, keeping pace with his opponent in the first set, taking it 6-4.  In the second set, Nolan took charge and didn’t look back, taking the set 6-3.

The always competitive first doubles team of Brady Atwell and Elijah Kincaid again went three sets in their match.  The first set saw Brady and Elijah outpace the Knights, taking it narrowly 7-5.

“The Knights figured out their game plan and took the second set 6-4, setting up the decisive third set,” Adams said. “This time, however, Brady and Elijah fell behind early and were unable to recover, dropping the final set 1-6.

Brett Bultsma and Mark Musgrave, playing second doubles, were able to dispatch the Knights 6-2, 6-0 and the third doubles team of Hunter Haase and Austin Graham started to come together as a team and took their flight 6-2, 6-2.

At fourth doubles, the new team of Chase Robinson and Kevin Keena were learning the ropes and fell 0-6, 1-6.

The Wayland boys look forward to defending their home courts Wednesday against another O-K Gold Conference opponent in Ottawa Hills. The Wildcats are 2-7-1 on the season overall.
