The Wayland High School boys’ varsity track team Saturday won the Hopkins Invitational and the girls’ squad finished second in the nine-team fields.

The Wildcat boys amassed 124.5 points to finish 7.5 points ahead of Fremont and Hopkins came in third with 106.5. Grand Rapids West Michigan Aviation was first in the girls’ division with 128.5, Wayland had 125 and Hopkins 112.5.

Ian Thompson of Wayland and Trevor Shealy of Hopkins went one-two in the sprints, the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Thompson took the 100 in 11.19 seconds and the 200 in 22.89. Thompson also added a first in the long jump at 19-10.5.

Wildcat Austin Reeder also was a double winner, capturing the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.81 and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 43.21.

Reeder, Thompson, Cainon Fenn and Tim Wierckz hooked up to win the 400-meter relay in 45.73 seconds. Cooper Kotrba, Fenn, Reeder and Wireckz also combined efforts to win the 800 relay in 1:37.49.

Carson Noyes came in first in the discus with a toss of 126-6.

Hopkins’ Mason Tomes was second in the shot put and third in the discus. Freshman Isaac Koperski was third in the high hurdles.

Freshman Landen Klinge of Hopkins won the pole vault in 12 feet.

For the Lady Wildcats, freshman Eliot Antel was first in the 400-meter run in 1:05.69. Sophomore Brenna Hyde took the 100-meter high hurdles in 17.81, but was edged by Hopkins’ Alex Jackson in the 300-meter hurdles with a 53.77-second performance. Jackson had been runner-up in the highs.

Faith Rollandini, Antel, Taylor Wolf and Audrey Lepper won the 800-meter relay in 1:56.11. Wolf, Rollandini, Antel and Hyde captured first in the 1600 relay in 4:34.76. Rollandini also was second in the 100-meter dash.

Samantha Wilson and Johnnie Mellema went one-two for Wayland in the pole vault and Hopkins’ Emaus was third.

Lady Viking Grace Brenner won the shot put, as is her custom, throwing the sphere 32-10 and she was second in the discus. Freshman Helena Kerber finished second in the open 800 with a time of 2:40.08 and she was runner-up in the 3200.

Hopkins freshman Vanessa Barry got the better of Wayland’s Hyde and Lepper by leaping to first place in the long jump at 15-9.5.

The Hopkins 400 relay team of Jackson, Kendall Mohr, Sophia Garvin and Sierra Emaus finished second.
