Wildcats clinch yet another O-K Gold softball title

The Wayland softball team Monday clinched yet another O-K Gold Conference championship Wednesday with a 9-1 victory over South Christian. It was Wayland’s 29th league title.

Game two of the twin bill was halted in the bottom of the second inning because of lightning, Wayland was up 3-0, in large part because of a two-run home run by Carli Miklusicak.

Madi Ludema threw a complete game in the opener for the Wildcats, scattering 10 hits and permitting just one run. She didn’t walk anybody and struck out three.

Centerfielder Reese Veltman collected three hits as many at-bats and Hannah Rairigh and Loren Wright both added two hits to the offensive attack. Both Ludema and Rairigh drove in a pair of runs.

Junior Harmony Laker was on the mound for the ‘Cats in the nightcap. She and her teammates will resume the contest Wednesday to complete the regular season.

It won’t matter in the league standings because Wayland moved its O-K Gold record to 13-0 with the victory in the opener and the Sailors fell to 10-3 and will have to settle for the runner-up slot.

Wayland has won the O-K Gold title in the last four years after having its 14-straight streak halted in 2019 by Thornapple Kellogg.
