The Wayland varsity baseball clawed its way back from a 4-0 deficit to claim a 6-5 victory over Grand Rapids Catholic Central Catholic Central Tuesday evening in the nightcap of a double-header.
The victory lifted the Wildcats’ overall season record to 3-10.
Parker Atwell delivered the game-winning RBI, scoring Matt Schaendorf from second base with two outs in the top of the seventh inning.
Getting the win on the mound for Wayland was Bradey Weston, who came in and pitched three innings of shutout baseball in relief of starter Carter Morse. Sean Maddux picked up the save on the mound, pitching a perfect seventh inning to seal the deal for the Wildcats.
Leading the way offensively for Wayland Union were Sean Maddux, Matt Schaendorf, Parker Atwell and Auston Whitley. Maddux was 2-for-3 with a double, 2 RBI’s, and a run scored. Schaendorf was 1-for-2 with a triple, 2 walks, and 2 runs scored. Atwell not only delivered the game winning hit, but also went 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. Whitley was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Wayland lost the first game of the double-header to Catholic Central by a score of 4-0. Taking the loss on the mound for the Wildcats was Keaton McNees. McNees pitched a complete game, allowing 4 runs, 3 earned, on 6 hits while striking out 4.
Matt Schaendorf led the offensive attack for Wayland, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Wildcats are back in action Thursday, April 28, as they host Catholic Central in the rubber match of the 3-game series. First pitch is set for 4:15 p.m. at Phil Regan Field.
