Freshman Ava Makowski

Wayland girls finished seventh and Wildcat boys eighth in the first O-K Gold Conference cross-country jamboree of the season Tuesday at the South Christian High School Athletic Complex.

Host South Christian won the boys’ competition, touching out Cedar Springs, 66-71. Wayland boys had a team score of 170.

In the girls’ meet, Wayland had 147 team points. Forest Hills Eastern won it with 66 and Thornapple Kellogg had 70.

Freshman sensation Ava Makowski was Wayland’s top runner for the second time in a row with a five-kilometer time of 20:53.30. Sophomore Olivia Barabas was 12th, junior Hannah Smith 34th, freshman Elliot Antel 43rd and sophomore Emma Byers 58th.

Individual medalist was Madison Ebright of Ottawa Hills in 19:05.64.

Sophomore Travis Koon once again was the Wildcats boys’ medalist, with a time of 18:08.57, good for 14th place. Sophomore Devin Weaver was 29th in 19:10.92, freshman Henry Oudbier 34th in 19:34.66. freshman Casey Jansen 41st in 19:50.63 and freshman Carter VanWyk finished 52nd.

Corey Bowers of Cedar Springs was the top male runner of the day with a time of 16:10.2.
