The Wayland varsity softball team Saturday defeated three opponents to claim the championship again in the Gull Lake Invitational.
The Wildcats bested Mattawan 5-1, clobbered their second opponent, Edwardsburg, 19-0, and blanked Vicksburg 4-0 in the finale for the day. The results left them with a 4-1 record for the season thus far.
Senior Emma Ludema hurled seven innings in the opener, striking out eight. Hannah Rairigh and Kennedy Cole drove in runs and Rairigh and Kami Morse both had two hits.
Freshman Harmony Laker pitched a shutout in game two. Kaelyn Sikkema and Emma Tornes both had a pair of hits and Sikkema and Jada Mohon both drove in a couple of runs while Rairigh knocked in three.
Ludema came back to blank Vicksburg in the last game of the day. Wayland plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put its opponent away.
Ludema and Rya Vaderkooi both delivered RBI hits.
The Wildcats, who have won four in a row since a season-opening 4-1 loss to Jenison, are scheduled to entertain archrival South Christian Tuesday in the O-K Gold Conference opener for both schools.
