The Wayland boys’ varsity basketball team lifted its overall season record to 8-2 and record in the O-K Gold Conference to 3-0 with a 49-42 victory Wednesday night at East Grand Rapids.
The contest was played Wednesday instead of Tuesday because of inclement weather.
It was a see-saw defensive battle until the fourth quarter, when senior pivot Cory Ainsworth scored 10 points in a Wildcat burst. He finished with 24 points and Riley Fields added seven and Carson Sevigny six. Jack Ward had nine for the Pioneers.
East Grand Rapids, with the defeat, fell to 5-5 overall and the Pioneers are 4-2 in league play.
Meanwhile, the Wayland girls’ squad fell to 1-7 Wednesday night with a 74-35 defeat at the hands of East Grand Rapids on the home court.
