Wildcats end regular season with 2 wins over Lowell

Wayland’s four seniors are nearing the end of their prep careers in softball.

The Wayland softball team Thursday afternoon decided to go ahead and end the regular season with a non-league doubleheader against Lowell. The Lady Wildcats came away with a 4-2 victory and prevailed 15-2 in the nightcap to lift their overall season record to 27-7-1.

Harmony Laker was the pitcher of record in game one, going the seven-inning distance, giving up six hits and two runs. She walked one batter and struck out four.

Laker, Madi Ludema and Caril Miklusicak each had two hits in the contest. Laker drove home two runs with a double and a triple and Ludema and Miklusicak each had one RBI.

The Wildcats increased their record to 27-7-1 overall, with a 15-2 victory over Lowell in game two. Madi Ludema took the victory on the mound, in five innings of play, which was cut short because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Leading the Wildcats’ offense was Hannah Rairigh and Reese Veltman, both going 3-for-3. Rairigh had a double and a triple. Shelby VanHouten was 2-for-2. Madi Ludema was 2-for-3, with a double. Carli Mikluisicak and Rae Stallard both added singles.

Wayland received a forfeit from Allegan in the first round of the district tournament at Hopkins Saturday. It will face the winner of the Hopkins-Middleville Thornapple Kellogg semifinal at noon for the district championship.
