The Wayland boys’ varsity tennis team; Thursday evened its season record at 1-1 with a  convincing 7-1 triumph at home against Cedar Springs.

Coach Ben Adams quipped, “This is the second match this week against a ‘Hawk’ team (Hamilton Hawkeyes and Cedar Springs Red Hawks), and the Wildcats are 1-1.”

Notable victories went to freshmen Dawson Babiak, Spencer Miller, and Brycen Rookus, all collecting their first varsity wins. Isaiah Gates stepped up at the last minute to play Cedar’s exhibition player and won his match 6-3, 6-4.

Another notable win went to Chesney Hudson and Brayden Tomson, winning their match 6-0, 6-0, bringing their record for the season to 2-0. Jacob VanDuine also remains 2-0 at third singles.

“All positions played well and the team is starting to shake off their early season jitters and find their pace,” Adams continued. “There’s plenty more tennis on the way, with Coopersville and Lowell next week.”
