The Wayland varsity softball team extended its winning streak to seven games and swept a doubleheader Wednesday to open defense of its O-K Gold Conference championship.

The Lady Wildcats scored a couple of mercy rule victories, 15-0 and 14-4 over Forest Hills Eastern.

Sophomore ace Harmony Laker threw a two-hit shutout in the first game, which ended after four innings because of the 10-run rule. She walked none and struck out eight batters, yielding only two hits from the Hawks.

On the offensive side, freshman Maddie Ludema collected three hits and Carli Miklusicak, Loren Wright and Kami Morse added two apiece. Miklusicak, Leduc and Izzy Johnson each had a double and Miklusicak and Morse both unloaded a triple.

Ludema picked up her second varsity mound victory in the nightcap, yielding three runs and five hits in five innings. Miklusicak threw the last inning in relief.

Morse and Kaylee Lown delivered a pair of doubles apiece and Ludema and Rae Stallard both added one two-bagger. Ludema and Harmony Laker both belted a triple.

The Lady Wildcats lost their season opener in the first game of a twin bill last Thursday at Byron Center, but since then they’ve captured the championship trophy in the Lakeshore Slam tourney and swept a league season opening twin bill to run their overall season record to 7-1.
