Wildcats’ furious 2nd half rally falls short at Kenowa

The Wayland boys’ varsity basketball put together a furious second-half rally, fueled by three-point field goals, only to fall short in the end, 62-55, at Kenowa Hills.

The girls’ team, meanwhile, breezed to a 52-21 triumph to move their overall season record to 7-2 and 5-1 in the O-K Gold Conference.

The Wildcat boys found themselves unable to penetrate the Kenowa zone defense and fell behind by as many as 12 points, 34-22, at intermission.

But Wayland drilled seven three-pointers from the start of the second half to early in the fourth quarter and crept to within a single one-point deficit twice in the last three minutes. The ‘Cats’ outside shooting, which brought them so close, failed them in the waning moments.

A key turning point occurred in the last two seconds of the third period when Wayland had pulled to within four, 45-41, but a Knight came up with a three-point play.

Wayland now has a 1-10 overall record. The Wildcats will play at Cedar Springs Thursday, when they take on the only team they’ve beaten this season.
