Wildcats handcuffed by district champion Gull Lake

Some terrific pitching by Gull Lake’s Julian Harris shut down the Wayland High School baseball season Saturday morning in a Division 2 district tournament semiifinal conest.

Harris, who has committed to pitching next year for Western Michigan University, fired a two-hit shutout at Phil Regan Field. He struck out 10, walked none and his fastball has been clocked at 90 + mph. 

Carter Koopman took the loss, tossing 5 1/3 innings allowing 5 runs, 2 of which were earned, on 8 hits, striking out 2 and walking 2. The ‘Cats also struggled to field the baseball, committing 5 errors during the game. 

Bryce Calkins pitched 2/3 of an inning, surrendering 3 hits and 1 run. 

The lone Wayland hits came off the bats of Reagan Mutschler and Brayden Byrne.

The ‘Cats season ends with a 19-12 overall record. 

Otsego beat Hopkins 6-0 to advance to the championship game vs. Gull Lake, which beat Otsego 12-2 in a 5 inning mercy in the championship.
