All three area varsity football teams wound up in the winning column Friday night, and the verdicts all were kind of special.
Wayland improved to 2-0 on the season with a 27-10 triumph at Holland Christian. Martin did likewise with a 50-6 pasting of visiting Gobles in the annual Onion Kings tribute game. And Hopkins rebounded nicely from its season opening defeat at Wayland a week ago with a convincing 33-14 romp over Allendale.
The Wildcats’ victory was a bit startling because Holland Christian was fresh from a 58-0 shellacking over Holland. Wayland has not won two games in a season since 2018, and it already has that done in just two outings.
Martin raced out to a 26-6 advantage at the half against Gobles and the Clippers added 24 more points in the third and fourth quarters. They haven’t been beaten on the gridiron during the regular season yet since they switched to eight-man football.
Hopkins had to be worried about losing 42-25 to a Wayland team that was winless in 2021, but the Vikings managed to put five touchdowns on the board to even their season record at 1-1.
Wayland will open O-K Gold Conference play for the season next Friday evening at Middleville Thornapple Kellogg. Martin, meanwhile, will be at Marcellus and Hopkins will be home again to entertain Wyoming Godwin Heights for its O-K Silver debut.
