Wildcats Mathis, Huff cop 2nd places at state meet

Wayland athletes Evie Mathis in the pole vault and Adam Huff in the discus captured second place honors at the Division 2 state track meet Saturday at Forest Hills Eastern.

Mathis, a freshman who has been battling hamstring issues all spring, cleared 12 feet, tying her personal best performance and breaking her own school record of 11-6. Mathis lost to Allison Shelton of Ortonville Brandon on fewer misses, but edged out Claire Agnew of Owosso. All three girls cleared 12 feet.

Huff, only a sophomore, hurled the discus 1`59-8. Also a sophomore, Kennedy Jasinski finished sixth by clearing 11 feet, her personal best performance. She had tied Mathis for top honors at 10-6 two weeks ago in the regional meet. The two accounted for 11 points in that one event.

The Wayland Union boys finished tied for 16th with Notre Dame Prep with 13 points. The girls were tied for 22nd with Yale and Vicksburg with 12 points.

Also reaking into the scoring column were Kaharrie Pureifoy, eighth in the 100-meter dash in 10.94 seconds and sixth in the 200 dash in 22.5 seconds. He also was eighth in the long jump at 20-11.75. Trent Baugh of Hopkins was 10th in that event at 20-6.

Wildcat senior Breanna Hyde captured eighth pace in the long jump at 16-11 and Hopkins’ Jaeden Harshberger tied for eighth in the high jump by clearing 4-11.

Also competing at the state mee, but not scoring, were:

• Devin Weaver, 18th in the 800-meter run in 2:00.44.

• Austin Graham, 11th in the prelims for the 110-meter high hurdles, 15.56.

• The 400-meter relay team of Terry Sylvester, Graham, Cannon Fenn and Pureifoy, 12th in 43.79.

• The 3200-meter relay team of Dylan Pallett, Maugran Howard, Travis Koon and Devin Weaver, 17th in 8:11.74.

• Adam Huff, 16th in the shot put at 47-0.75

• Olivia Barabas, 23rd in the 800 in 2:28.47.

• Kambria Moored, Ellarie Baugh, Sierra Emaus and Riley Homrich, 12th in the 400-meter relay.
