The Wayland boys’ varsity basketball team absorbed its fifth defeat of the season in as many tries Saturday evening in a 74-48 decision at the hands of Zeeland West.

The contest was played in the second round of the Cornerstone University Holiday Basketball Tournament. The Wildcats lost by 10 points to Wyoming Godwin Heights in the first round Thursday.

Wayland came out flat in the first quarter, falling behind 17-10 and then watched the Ducks extend their lead to 39-21 at the half. The third period turned out to be even worse, as the gap increased to 65-32.

The Wildcats was were rebounded by the taller Zeeland ballclub 39-23 and they managed to make only 31 percent of their field goal attempts. The Ducks were hot, converting on almost 60% from the field.

Junior guard Tyler Omness had his career high performance with 11 points and junior Riley Fields added nine and freshman Brett Bultsma had eight.
