The Wayland boys’ varsity basketball team claimed its second straight overtime victory Saturday with a 73-69 decision over Detroit Cornerstone in the Redhawk Showcase at Grand Rapids Union High School.
The win followed a 76-69 double overtime triumph Friday evening over O-K Gold Conference rival Grand Rapids South Christian.
Wayland led 31-30 at the half on a late three by Carter Nyp, but fell behind 53-42 after three quarters. The Wildcats battled back to tie the ballgame at 64-all at the end of regulation.
Cornerstone featured 6-8 forward Mr. Basketball candidate Jamal Cain, who has committed to Marquette University. He scored 34 points and had 14 rebounds. Cain scored 15 points in the third quarter alone.
Sophomore Jack Donewald swished a three-point shot to tie the game at 64 with just 27 seconds left in regulation.
Wayland was led by Hudson, who scored 25 points, and he and Cain both were selected to the all-Showcase team.
Wayland, which was ranked No. 7 in the latest state-wide Associated Press Class B poll last week, now is 11-2 for the campaign overall and 6-1 in league play. They will play Grand Rapids Christian Tuesday night against the state’s No. 2-ranked team in Class A.
